Cryolipolysis: What is it and how does it work?

Cryolipolysis is a term many people use to describe a range of treatments like body sculpting or non-surgical liposuction. Scientific studies have shown cryolypolisis effectively kills fat cells in a targeted area at the time of treatment. Our cryolipolysis treatments freeze your fat cells, targeting problem areas that can be resistant to diet and exercise. The extreme cooling process then targets and eliminates fat cells that are present at the time of treatment without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Cryolipolysis works by utilising the body’s natural response to cold temperatures. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than other cells in the body, and when cooled to the correct temperature, crystallise and die. This does not affect any other cells in the body. After your cryolipolysis treatment is complete, your body will naturally collect the damaged fat cells and eliminate them. This is why you can safely complete a fat freezing treatment without any downtime, unlike more traditional liposculpture procedures.

We use an effective, proven, and non-invasive medical device called Cooltech, which is designed for fat reduction treatments as an alternative to liposuction and other extreme and costly fat reduction procedures. Cooltech provides permanent removal of the fat cells present at the time of treatment without the costs and recovery time of liposuction.

Benefits of a Cryolipolisis Treatment

Cryolipolysis can help sculpt parts of the body that are difficult to shift through only diet and exercise – areas such as the stomach, hips, arms, thighs and neck. Our clients can expect to see up to a 30% reduction in the target areas after just 2 treatments.

Cryolipolysis is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that involves minimal downtime for clients. It is a less painful and quicker way to achieve fat reduction results when compared to surgical liposuction.

What to expect at a cryolipolysis treatment

Your treatment will commence with your practitioner marking the areas of fat to be treated on your body while you are upright. Once you are comfortably settled in the treatment position, a Coolpad will be applied on the area to be treated to ensure complete protection for the surface of your skin. The hand-piece will be placed on the area to be treated and you will feel some tightness caused by the vacuum pressure and some localised cold as the fat pocket is drawn up into the ‘cup’ of the hand piece. This feeling will reduce over the next ten minutes after the treatment starts as the entire area is numbed by the low temperature.

When the applicator is removed, the treated area will feel cold and firm. A 5-minute after-treatment massage will help restore the frozen fat layer back to normal and will also assist in optimising your results. The treated area may remain tender and there may be some slight intermittent tingling or numbness for up to 4 weeks or more after the treatment. This is normal and expected part of the treatment process.

All our therapists are highly trained registered nurses and are experienced with performing this treatment. They also have access to a team of medical experts. They will walk you through the whole procedure and be on hand to assist you at all times throughout the treatment.

Every body is different so we recommend getting in touch for a free consultation to see what would be best for you and your body goals.

What is Cryolipolysis and how does it work?
Cryolipolysis is the medical treatment for destroying fat cells.  CCA’s Cooltech system cools fat cells to temperatures that cause fat cell death.  This results in an average of 30% reduction of fat in the treated area, each treatment.  In the weeks that follow treatment, as the fat cells die, they are safely removed by your body’s lymphatic drainage system naturally.

How does a Cryolipolysis treatment feel?
The treatment is usually very comfortable.  The procedure allows a patient to return to their normal daily activities since it is not a surgical procedure and a non-invasive treatment.  Some patients experience some mild discomfort at the start of the treatment from the suction applied to the handpiece coupled with the cold temperature, or during massage of the area immediately after treatment.

Are there any side effects?
Cryolipolysis is a simple, non-invasive “walk-in, walk-out” treatment.  Normal and temporary side-effects associated with this treatment that you may or may not experience include numbness, tenderness, swelling, itching, and redness at the treatment site.  There is no down time, no surgery involved, you simply come to your appointment and afterwards resume your normal daily activities.

A systematic review was conducted in 2015 that determined Cryolipolysis is more effective that Liposuction, when taking into accounts the risks associated with Liposuction (The Safety and Efficacy of Cryolipolysis: A Systematic Review of Available Literature, Chase D Derrick MD; Sachin M Shridharani MD and Justin M Broyles MD)

Am I a good candidate for Cryolipolysis?
The majority of people who are generally within, or slightly over, their appropriate weight, but have fat bulges that don’t respond to diet or exercise generally get the best results from Cryolipolysis.  Patients with too little fat or too much fat in the target area may not be an ideal candidate for treatment. This can be determined at your complimentary consultation with CCA.

Whilst Cryolipolysis is not a treatment for weight loss or obesity (BMI 30+), CCA do have a 21-day detox program where previous patients have lost between 3-11kg (average 8kg) of weight over the 21 days.  Ask your therapist about this detox program at your complimentary consultation.
